Wall Area With Openings Calculator
Subtract user-measured door and window openings from gross wall area for material planning.
Use this before paint, panel, or sheet estimates when openings materially reduce the surface to cover.
What the result means
This is gross rectangular wall area less the openings supplied. It supports quantity planning and does not describe the wall assembly.
The formula
Wall length * wall height - total opening area
Results are displayed to at most two decimal places. Calculations use the unrounded inputs.
A worked example
Put the formula to work
- Wall length (metres)
- 8
- Wall height (metres)
- 2.5
- Total opening area (square metres)
- 4
Net wall area: 16
An eight by 2.5 metre wall less four square metres of openings leaves 16 square metres.
How to use this calculator
- Measure gross wall length and height.
- Measure every opening and add their areas.
- Subtract openings from the gross rectangle.
- Use the net area in a separate material calculator.
Why this number matters
Openings are a real distinction in surface planning and make the area passed to paint or sheet estimates auditable.
Input definitions
- Wall length (metres)
- Gross wall length in metres.
- Wall height (metres)
- Gross wall height in metres.
- Total opening area (square metres)
- Combined measured area of doors and windows.
Assumptions and limitations
- Returns, trim, corners, texture, and multiple coats require separate allowances.
- It assumes a rectangular gross wall and measured opening areas.
- It is not structural or building-code advice.
